New timber kerb built on a flat roof ready to take a rooflight

Who we are

Steelcity Skylights is a Sheffield rooflight firm. We install new skylights, rooflights, roof lanterns, roof windows and sun tunnels, and we replace old ones that have misted, leaked, stuck or simply had their day. Homes come first. Small commercial jobs are welcome too, on the same services and the same terms.

We work from Sheffield across a 30-mile road radius, and we come to you. There are no public premises to visit, so every conversation starts with a message, a phone call or a WhatsApp, and every job starts with a free survey at the property.

Chosen for the long run

A rooflight sits on your roof for a very long time. The frame and the kerb it stands on can last for decades. The parts inside it do not, and they are not meant to. Seals and gaskets age in the sun and the frost. Motors, rain sensors and controllers on electric units reach the end of their working life. Sealed glass units can mist when the edge seal gives way. Blinds, flashings and trims wear at their own pace.

Most people choose a rooflight on how it looks and what it costs. That is fair, but it leaves out the question that matters in year ten or twelve: when one of those parts wears, what happens next? If the motor is no longer made, or a misted pane can only be dealt with by lifting the whole unit out of the roof, a small fault becomes a big job.

So we choose and fit with the second decade in mind. That means:

  • products whose wear parts can still be bought and swapped
  • glass units that can come out without disturbing the roof covering
  • a fixing and flashing detail that can be opened again later without wrecking the roof around it

Sheffield made its name making things that last. We think a rooflight should be bought the same way.

The life plan

Every written quote we send carries a short life plan. It names the unit we propose and its size. It lists the parts that will wear over the years. For each one it says how that part is replaced and whether doing so disturbs the roof. It gives you the long view before you spend anything, and it gives whoever looks after the house later a clear record of what is up there.

The life plan does not promise that anything lasts forever, and it does not put dates on failures. It sets out checkpoints: the things worth looking at as the years go by, and what to do when one of them needs attention. You can see how a life plan is laid out on the life plan page.

How a job runs

Every job follows the same steps, whether it is one roof window in a stone terrace or a large lantern over a new kitchen.

  • Your enquiry. Send the form, call or WhatsApp us with a little about the room and the roof. Photos help.
  • The free survey. We visit, measure the opening, look at the roof covering and the structure beneath, check access and talk through what you want from the room.
  • The fixed written quote. We send a written quote with a fixed price for the work described, along with the life plan for the unit we recommend.
  • Building Regulations. We fit to current Building Regulations. If the job needs signing off, the Building Control paperwork is ours to arrange, not yours.
  • Fitting day. We protect the room, form or prepare the opening, fit the unit, flash and weatherproof it, then make good inside to the standard set out in the quote.
  • Handover. We show you how the unit works and leave the life plan with you, so you know what will need attention later and how it is dealt with.

Where we work

We cover Sheffield and the towns and villages within 30 miles by road. That takes in the city's own suburbs and outlying towns such as Stocksbridge, Chapeltown and Mosborough, then out across South Yorkshire to Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster. To the south it reaches Dronfield, Chesterfield and the north Derbyshire towns. To the west it runs up to the Peak edge at Bakewell, Buxton and Glossop, and to the east into north Nottinghamshire as far as Worksop and Retford.

The housing across that area keeps us thinking. Stone terraces on steep streets, 1930s semis with tiled roofs, post-war estates, gritstone cottages in conservation areas and brand new flat-roofed extensions all ask for a different detail at the roof. You can find your town on our areas page.

Our guarantee

Every installation carries our 10-year workmanship guarantee. It covers the work we do: the fitting of the unit, the flashing, the weatherproofing and the making good. The products themselves are covered by their manufacturers' own warranties, and we help you use them if a product fault turns up. The full terms, including what is excluded and how to make a claim, are on our guarantee page.

What we fit

We install and replace roof lanterns, flat roof rooflights, roof windows including VELUX windows, electric and opening rooflights, energy efficient rooflights, walk-on rooflights, conservation rooflights and sun tunnels. We also replace misted and failed rooflight units. Each service has its own page under our services, with the detail on how that type of unit ages and what wears.
