The guarantee at a glance

Every rooflight, skylight, roof lantern, roof window and sun tunnel we install or replace carries our 10-year workmanship guarantee. If the work we did fails because of how we did it, we come back and put it right at no cost to you. The guarantee runs for ten years from the date the installation is completed.

This page explains what that covers, what it does not, and how to use it. It sits alongside your rights in law, which it does not reduce in any way.

What the guarantee covers

The guarantee covers our workmanship: the work we carry out at your property. That includes:

  • The fitting. How the unit is fixed into the roof or onto its kerb, including the kerb or upstand where we built it, and any trimming of rafters or joists we carried out.
  • The flashing. The flashing kit or flashing detail we fitted around the unit, and how it is dressed into the roof covering.
  • The weatherproofing. The joins we made between the unit, the kerb and the roof covering, so that water stays out where it should.
  • The making good. The internal lining, plasterwork and finishes we carried out around the opening, to the extent set out in your quote.

If, for example, water gets in at a flashing we fitted because it was fitted badly, or plasterwork we did around the opening cracks because it was done badly, that is covered.

What the guarantee does not cover

The guarantee is about our work. Some things fall outside it, and we would rather say so clearly now.

  • Product defects. Faults in the unit itself, such as a glass unit that mists because its edge seal fails, a motor or rain sensor that stops working, or a frame defect, are covered by the manufacturer's own warranty, not by our workmanship guarantee. The length and terms of that warranty are set by the manufacturer, and we name the product in your quote so you know whose warranty applies. If a product fault turns up, tell us and we will help you raise it with the manufacturer.
  • Normal ageing of wear parts. Seals, gaskets, blinds, motors and similar parts age with use, sun and weather. Wear that happens in the normal way over time is not a workmanship fault. Your life plan lists these parts and how each one is replaced when the time comes.
  • Damage. Damage from accidents, impacts, falling branches, misuse, fire or flood, and damage caused by storms or severe weather beyond what a properly fitted unit should withstand.
  • Alterations and work by others. Problems caused by anyone else working on the unit, the flashing or the roof around it, or by later alterations to the roof or the room.
  • Lack of basic care. Problems caused by leaves, moss or debris left to build up around the unit or blocking the water's path off the roof, or by ignoring a fault once it is known about so that it becomes worse.
  • Parts of the roof we did not work on. Leaks or defects elsewhere in the roof, away from the area we opened up and closed again.

How to make a claim

If you think something we did has gone wrong, contact us as soon as you notice it. Acting quickly limits any further damage.

  • Email info@steelcityskylightssheffield.co.uk, call us on 0114 419 0424 or message us on WhatsApp at +44 7880 284133.
  • Tell us your name, the address of the property and roughly when we did the work.
  • Describe what you have noticed. Photos help, especially of any water marks, staining or cracks, and of the outside of the unit if you can see it safely from the ground or a window. Please do not go onto the roof yourself.

We will arrange a visit to look at the problem. If it comes from our workmanship, we put it right at no cost to you. If it turns out to be a product fault, we help you take it up with the manufacturer under their warranty. If it is something else, we explain what we found and what can be done, and we will quote for any work before doing it.

If you sell the house

Rooflights stay with the house, and buyers often ask what guarantees come with them. If you are selling, speak to us about the guarantee on your installation and we will talk you through it. Keep your written quote and the life plan together with the other house papers, as they show what was fitted and when.

Your legal rights

This guarantee is in addition to your statutory rights. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, work must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, and goods supplied must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. Nothing in this guarantee takes away from those rights.
